Tourist Information

Barcelona is situated on Spain's beautiful Mediterranean coast. It is the country's second most important city, with over 1.5m inhabitants, and the economic and administrative capital of Catalonia.

Barcelona is world famous as a city of culture. Over 40 museums including the Museu Picasso, the Fundació Joan Miró and the Fundacio Antoni Tàpies hold permanent exhibitions of works by the artists, as well as temporary shows. The world's finest collection of Romanesque art may be found at the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya. Exhibitions of contemporary art are always on at the Museu d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona (MACBA) and there are numerous other art galleries and museums around the city.

Great architecture and design are characteristics of Barcelona and may be seen in its streets, squares, bars and restaurants as well as landmark buildings by Gaudi and other celebrated architects.

There are countless restaurants and bars to delight every taste and budget, from Catalan cuisine to world-class international dining. The city also offers exceptional shopping, especially for fashion and stylish contemporary design.

Barcelona has one of the world's most famous and charming funfairs situated on the mountain of Tibidabo, overlooking the city.

Language

The official language for the conference is English. Catalan and Spanish are the official languages in Barcelona.

Delegates should make their own travel arrangements to and from Barcelona. Local Time in Barcelona GMT + 1 hour

Entry Formalities

For information on passport/visa requirements for entry into Spain, contact the Spanish Embassy, Consulate or High Commission in your country. Should you need to apply for a visa, the Congress Office will send you a letter of invitation to support your application. However you must contact us as soon as possible with your request.

Immunization and Health

There are no immunization regulations when entering Spain, however, be sure to familiarise yourself with the requirements of all countries through which you will travel.

Disabled Access and Special Assistance

Insurance

Delegates are advised to take out appropriate health and travel insurance.

Local Transport

Barcelona has five metro lines covering a total of 80.5 km and with 111 stations. It also has a city railway network which supplements the metro network. A fleet of 840 buses connects all the city's districts. There are a number of travel passes which can be used on public transport (metro, city railway and buses). These are valid for 1, 3 or 5 days. Barcelona has a fleet of 11,000 taxis which can be easily identified by their yellow and black livery. A green light on top of the taxi indicates its availability. The Metro is the easiest and fastest way of moving around the city. The nearest station to the Universitat Pompeu Fabra is Ciutadella/Vila Olímpica (line 4- yellow). Climate

The temperature in July is very warm and averages 20-25 degrees celsius (68-77 degress Fahrenheit). Evenings are cooler and light jackets or sweaters are recommended. For further information: www.bcn.es

Banks: Monday to Friday 08:30 – 14:00 hrs

Currency and Taxes

The currency used in Spain is the Euro. There is a 7% sales tax on food and a 16% sales tax on most other items.

Voltage

Electricity in Spain runs on 220 volts.

How to arrive to Barcelona from the airport

Barcelona is served by an international airport situated just 13km from the city centre. Upon your arrival, after exiting from customs, please proceed to the iHEA Transfer Kiosk, located near the exit, to find out about various transfer options into town, such as:

By Car
Barcelona is 13 km (8 miles) north-east of the airport. Access is via the C-246 highway - Autovia de Castelldefels. Journey time: 20 mins.
By Taxi
Taxis are available outside the terminals. Journey time to central Barcelona is 20 minutes. Approximate Fare: €20-25.
By Train
Trains operate every 30 minutes from 05:43 - 21:43, Mon - Fri (BCN Sants); Saturdays and Holidays 05:46 - 22:17. Journey times to: Barcelona Sants: 20 mins, Plaça Catalunya: 25 mins. Information in English is available at: +34 93 481 12 99. Approximate Fare: €3.
By Bus
The Aerobus service to Barcelona Plaça Catalunya runs every fifteen minutes between 06:00 and 23:00 Mon-Fri, and 06:30 to 22:50 Saturdays and Holidays. The service starts from each terminal. Buses are equipped to take wheelchairs. Information is available on +34 93 412 00 00. Fare: approx. 3EUR. Services operate to Plaça Espanya every 1 hr 20 mins daily from 06:20 - 19:40 on service Line EA. Services from 21:00 - 02:40. Line EN operates every 1 hour 05 minutes. Services pick up from all terminals. Fare: approx. €2.
