The theme of the Conference – Priorities and Equity in Health Care Policy - may be faced both with theoretical and empirical papers pertaining either to Italian or foreign experiences. Some examples of topics that fit the Conference targets include:

  • Basic levels of public health care: definition, consistency, impact on management
  • Funding and resource allocation at regional and local level: criteria, methods and effects
  • Determinants of health needs: macroeconomic effects and scope for public intervention
  • Relevance of ethical and economic values in defining priorities and management choices
  • Costs of unappropriate care: analysis and intervention strategies
  • Inequalities in health and access conditions, equity in health care delivery and finance
  • Policy options for reducing inequalities and promoting equity
  • Models, tools and experiences of measurement of equity and quality in health care
  • Responsibility of health care management in pursuing equity

A limited number of papers not specifically pertaining to the Conference theme will be admitted for discussion in one or more free sessions.

Some sessions in English language will be organized. The languages of the conference are English and Italian (with no simultaneous translation).

Abstracts are to be submitted before May 31st 2007 by e-mail to the members of the Scientific Committee and to the Conference Secretariat (e-mail addresses on the front page). Abstracts (not exceeding 2 pages), should mention:

  • name(s) of the author(s) and affiliation; corresponding author’s e-mail address, postal address and telephone number;
  • topic of the communication (choosing among the above-listed topics) or “free session”;
  • preferred presentation form (either oral presentation or poster);
  • title of communication;
  • objectives;
  • methodology;
  • main contents;
  • main references and specific original contribution of the communication.

Each abstract will be reviewed by the Scientific Committee and acceptance/rejection will be communicated by June 30th 2007.

Contributions will be accepted both as structured papers (5.000-7000 words) for oral presentation or as short communications (posters). Proposals coming from young researchers, chiefly PhDs, will be highly considered along with proposals coming from foreigner researchers.

Authors of original and unpublished papers, in age lower than 35 years (in case of more authors, the average age will be considered) can participate to the 2007 edition of the “AIES Prize for young researchers in Health Economics” (amount 1.500 Euro). Participation must be specified in the abstract.

Accepted papers must be submitted to the Conference Secretariat within September 3rd 2007.

5th Annual Southeastern Health Economics Study Group Conference

The Southeastern Health Economic Study Group (SHESG) conference is designed to promote active exchange and discussion of leading health economics research among senior and junior economists. Ten papers will be accepted for presentation.

This year, the conference will be hosted by the Triangle Health Economics Workshop at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and will consist of a full day of presentations on Friday, October 19, and a half-day of presentations on Saturday, October 20. Each paper will be allotted one hour, including author presentation, discussant comments, and questions from the floor. Participants in the conference will be limited to presenters, discussants, and other invited guests. While abstract submissions are invited from any geographical location, preference will be given to presenters from the southeastern region of the United States.

If you would like to participate, please submit an abstract (maximum of two pages, including title, authors, and indication of presenting author) in electronic format (pdf preferred) to SHESG@hpaa.sph.unc.edu by May 15, 2007.

Papers should not be published or accepted for publication. Decisions will be made by June 15, 2007. Papers must be received by the conference organizers by October 1, 2007. (Presenters who fail to provide a paper by October 1st will have their paper replaced by a substitute.) Papers will be available to discussants and other participants via the website after October 1, 2007.

Some meals will be provided during the conference. All other expenses, including transportation and lodging, are the participants’ responsibility.

"Beyond Health Insurance: Public Policy to Improve Health": The College of Medicine and the Institute of Government and Public Affairs, University of Illinois at Chicago

The College of Medicine and the Institute of Government and Public Affairs of the University of Illinois at Chicago are organizing a conference, “Beyond Health Insurance: Public Policy to Improve Health,” to be held November 15-16, 2007 on the campus of the University of Illinois at Chicago.
Submission Deadline: May 1, 2007

Organizers of the conference are interested in research in the following areas:

  • Disease Prevention and Health Promotion
  • Addressing Racial, Ethnic and Socioeconomic Disparities in Health
  • Developing and Regulating Pharmaceuticals
  • Consumer Information

Authors of papers selected for presentation will receive an honorarium of $2,500 and organizers will cover the cost of conference-related travel and lodging.

Conference papers will be published in an edited volume with a university press or as a special issue of a professional journal. Therefore, authors have to agree to have their original research published as part of the conference proceedings (i.e., book chapter or special issue of journal).

Selection Process: Approximately 10 to 12 papers will be selected. The organizing committee will give priority to original research with direct public policy application. Participants will be selected on the basis of papers or extended abstracts of approximately 500 words.

Submission Deadline: May 1st, 2007

Authors chosen to present papers will be notified by June 1st, 2007.
