IHEA 2025 Congress Abstract submission system is now open!

Spotlight on the Indonesia Health Economics Association (InaHEA), the 2025 Congress Co-Hosts

Health economics has been of interest in Indonesia for many years. In the 1980s, Perhimpunan Peminat Ekonomi Kesehatan Indonesia (PPEKI) or the Assembly of Health Economics Enthusiasts was founded by Professor Ascobat Gani, a pioneer in health economics in Indonesia.

Indonesian health economists presented 30 papers at the 2013 IHEA Congress in Sydney, Australia. This unprecedented achievement demonstrated the strength of health economics in Indonesia and contributed to the establishment of the Indonesian Health Economist Association (InaHEA) in 2014. The growth of health economics in Indonesia was also related to the move towards the institutionalization of universal health coverage and major enhancements in the health system country-wide. In the same year as the establishment of InaHEA, 2014, Indonesia’s national health insurance administration agency, the Badan Penyelenggaraan Jaminan Sosial Kesehatan (BPJS Kesehatan), was launched to provide universal health coverage. Health economics has since remained at the center of Indonesia’s universal health coverage development.

InaHEA was established with three objectives:

  1. To develop the professionalism of health economists in Indonesia;
  2. To promote health economic perspectives and analyses as a robust basis to improve Indonesia’s health policy and practices; and
  3. To increase the provision of capacity building in health economics to contribute to sustainable and improved quality health services in Indonesia.

InaHEA is currently chaired by Dr. Hasbullah Thabrany, MPH, Dr.PH and its members are drawn from universities, ministries, healthcare providers, professional associations, BPJS Kesehatan, legislative bodies, and International NGOs based in Indonesia. Its annual congress has grown from about 250 participants in 2014 to 950 in 2023.

One of the hallmarks of health economics in Indonesia is the regular engagement between health economics researchers and policymakers to present research findings and discuss the policy implications. Partnerships with government agencies -such as the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Finance, BPJS Kesehatan, the National

Development Planning Agency (BAPPENAS), and National Team for the Acceleration of Poverty Reduction (TNP2K)- enable researchers to contribute evidence-based insights into policy development and evaluation.

Some of the key areas of health economics research in Indonesia include:

  • Healthcare financing, with a focus on the National Health Insurance (JKN) and its impact on access and quality of care.
  • Health inequities, particularly the social, economic, and geographical factors contributing to disparities in health outcomes.
  • The impact of illness on economic productivity.
  • Economic evaluation of maternal, nutritional, and child health interventions and their effects on family and community well-being.
  • The economics of tobacco consumption (Indonesia has the highest tobacco consumption rates globally).

IHEA is delighted to co-host the 2025 Congress with InaHEA. IHEA and InaHEA look forward to welcoming health economists from around the world to Indonesia in July 2025.
