Peter Binyaruka: I am a Health Economist and Health System Researcher, with more than 14 years of international research experience, based at Ifakara Health Institute (IHI) in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. I have a bachelor degree in Economics and Statistics, Masters’ degree in Health Economics, and a PhD in Health Economics from the University of Bergen, Norway.

I am currently an MRC/ FCDO African Research Leader (2023–2025) leading a program work on strategic health care purchasing through provider payment reforms in Tanzania. Other areas of my research include: the evaluation of health financing reforms (e.g., performance-based financing and health insurance), health financing equity and efficiency analysis, experimental economics, and monitoring progress toward universal health coverage (UHC). I am currently a member of the Countdown2030 Health Financing Data Analysis Centre (DAC), through which I provide technical and analytical support for health financing data analysis across several African countries (Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Senegal, Liberia, Côte d’Ivoire, Malawi, and Zambia). I have authored more than 47 peer-reviewed research articles, four book chapters, and three research-related blogs. Since 2024, I serve as Section Editor for Health Economics at Health Policy and Planning. My academic background and extensive research experience have positioned me to contribute to advancing health economics both regionally and globally.

I am committed to building capacity and supporting early career researchers in the region and beyond. I have engaged in various capacity building workshops/ webinars. For example, this year, I led a capacity building workshop on health financing analysis involving policymakers from six African countries. I also supervise students, mentor junior researchers, and teach health economics, health financing, and equity analysis for Masters students in three universities in Tanzania, and as a Distance Learning Tutor at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

I joined IHEA in 2015 and first participated in the 11th World Congress in Milan, Italy. Since then, I have continuously participated in every IHEA Congress—Boston, Basel, Cape Town, and Bali. Over this period, I have organised, chaired, and contributed to multiple organised sessions. Within IHEA, since 2022, I am one of the convenors of the Special Interest Group (SIG) on Health Financing for UHC, representing the African region. This role has deepened my understanding of the diverse perspectives and challenges faced by African health economists, and strengthened my commitment to ensuring Africa’s voice and research priorities are well represented in IHEA’s global agenda. I am also an active member of the African Health Economics and Policy Association (AfHEA) and Health System Global (HSG). I kindly request IHEA members to vote for me so I can amplify Africa’s voice within the global health economics community. If elected, I will strengthen efforts to address health system challenges through health economics tools, foster collaboration among health economists, support research capacity initiatives, and promote equitable participation of African scholars within IHEA. With extensive research experience, strong regional networks, and a passion for linking evidence to policy, I am committed to expanding IHEA’s reach and impact across Africa.
