Supporting IHEA constitutes a commitment re-discuss equitable universal health care and effective financial protection mechanisms to reach the poor. As in many other fora, regional representations are unbalanced due to several reasons: unequal funds availability, language barriers, poor incentives to participate in international peer-review publications and poor networking. Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) have not played a significant role in the global discussion, even though efforts were devoted to overcame this deficit.
LAC has several contributions to the global health economics debate, with valuable experiences in terms of decentralization, social health insurance schemes, result based financing, and access-related pharmaceutical policies. Nevertheless, relatively low exposure of researchers and policy-makers does not allow this exchange of experiences.
I have been an IHEA member since the very first World Congress, and my participation in the Society remained along the years. I contributed to the societal scientific committees, and my commitment to developing an agenda on health economics and health systems research in LMIC and LAC in particular has been always a significant part of my professional agenda.
My participation in international organizations includes been Board Member and Chair for the Americas in Health Systems Global during eight years (2016-2024), where I organized thirty-five regional pre-conferences in preparation of the global symposia, bringing regional actors to the world Congress. That initiative included partnering with circa eighty institutions (universities, research centers, think-tanks, public ministries and hospitals), involving open-call for abstracts, local scientific committees and speakers from around twenty countries. During these years, I brought new ideas to improve LAC participation. If I have the opportunity to join the Board, I will continue bringing new approaches to increase IHEA’s regional exposure and cross-regional debate. I am committed to contribute to a global agenda, where health economics issues become a central component for advocacy and better policy-making processes.
My new post as Chief Editor at the International Journal for Equity in Health (IJEqH) provides a complementary perspective: identify global areas of interest, expose academic debates and facilitate the exchange of ideas.I am an Argentinean citizen, Bachelor in Economics at the University of Buenos Aires. and PhD in Economics at Boston University, with thirty years of research experience on health economics and health systems and policies in Latin-America. I participate in a variety of projects within and outside LAC, working with public officials, building professional and academic ties. I am an Independent Researcher of the Argentinean Council for Scientific Research (CONICET), Senior Researcher at Center for the Study of State and Society (CEDES), and Director of the MBA-Health at the University of San Andrés, with teaching activities in several LAC Postgraduate Programs in Health Economics. I collaborated with a wide array of institutions, such as IDRC, Norhed, UNICEF, WHO, Pan-American Health Organization, USAid, Inter-American Foundation (IAF), Gates Foundation, World Bank, Global Development Network, the Global Fund; Inter-American Development Bank; GAVI Alliance, etc. I published numerous national and international peer review articles, chapters in books and books. www.danielmaceira.com.ar
