Flavia Mori Sarti: I am currently professor of Economics at the School of Arts, Sciences and Humanities of the University of Sao Paulo (Brazil), focusing on economic assessment of nutrition and health programs. I have a Bachelor degree in Economics from the School of Economics, Business Administration and Accountancy of the University of Sao Paulo (1996), and I have been working in the field of Health Economics since the beginning of my Ph.D. in 1998. I have extensive experience in coordination of research projects on Health Economics, including collaborations with the Pan American Health Organization and the World Bank. I have published 127 papers in peer-reviewed journals, 31 book chapters, and 7 books in my career, including an award-winning paper on outpatient costs of HIV treatment programs, published at the Journal of the Brazilian Medical Association (2014).

I am a member of the International Health Economics Association since 2021. I have been participating in the IHEA Mentoring Program since 2021, and I have been part of the IHEA Student Prize Committee since 2024, seeking to contribute to enhance the opportunities to early career researchers in developing countries. Furthermore, I support initiatives in Health Economics in Brazil through teaching and supervising students and early career researchers at the University of Sao Paulo and other universities.

My motivation to serve the position of IHEA Director for Latin America & the Caribbean relies on my early involvement in research and dissemination of Health Economics in the region, stemming from my collaboration in the multicentric research initiative conducted by the Pan American Health Organization on health care inequalities and inequities in the Americas in 2009. The project was followed by the extension of the research funded by the World Bank on 2012. The connection with remarkable researchers in the field of Health Economics marked my professional career and my pursuit of excellence in research to the present.

I believe that I may contribute to inclusion and appreciation of contributions from health economists at Latin American and Caribbean institutions in the global scenario. I would like to support the respectful exchange and dissemination of knowledge in the field of Health Economics, particularly in countries from the Global South. I believe that access to and dissemination of high-level knowledge on Health Economics may be the foundation for promotion of sustainable and equitable health systems in developing countries. I am especially dedicated to create learning and research opportunities based on rigorous methodology and ethics, including interactions with health system stakeholders to build effective strategies in public policies of health in Brazil that may be extended to other countries. My main goals in the position of IHEA Director for Latin America & the Caribbean during the period of 2026-2029 are:

  • To contribute for the organization and management of IHEA activities towards promotion of high-quality research and dissemination of knowledge in Health Economics in the region;
  • To disseminate the role of the IHEA in capacity building, education, and research on Health Economics, especially in Latin American and Caribbean countries.
