Did You Know?
A lower congress registration fee is only one of the many benefits of IHEA membership. For example, IHEA members can join any of the IHEA Special Interest Groups to network with members across the world working in the same field. Members also have the opportunity to participate in the mentorship program, which aims to support early- and mid-career health economists in their professional development and personal wellbeing. And, IHEA has just introduced an exciting new Fellowship Program.

Call for abstracts for early career researcher (ECR) pre-congress session at 2025 Congress
Deadline: January 31, 2025
A key objective of the Early Career Researcher Special Interest Group (ECR-SIG) is to facilitate communication and exchange of ideas between ECRs and senior health economists. The ECR-SIG conveners are therefore organizing a pre-congress session dedicated to ECRs. The aim of this session is to provide a forum for ECRs to have their research discussed and to receive detailed feedback from both their peers and senior researchers in their field. The session will be held on Saturday 19 July, 2025 (12:30 to 18:00) at the Bali International Convention Centre.
ECRs are invited to submit an abstract to be considered for participation in the session. Submitting an abstract for this session will not impact on your eligibility to participate in the main congress. Participating ECRs will be selected through a competitive review process. Those selected will be expected to submit a full draft of their paper by mid-June 2025. This should be unpublished advanced work in progress, including results and a discussion section.
Each accepted paper will be allocated a 45-minute slot, during which a senior health economist will provide detailed comments on the paper, particularly on how it can be improved. There will also be input from other ECRs and senior researchers attending the session.
The benefits of this session will not only accrue to the ECRs whose abstracts are selected. All ECR attendees will benefit from hearing the feedback provided by senior health economists, some of which will be specific to the submitted paper, and some of which will be more general. All ECR attendees will have access to senior health economists during the session and refreshment breaks.
This session presents a unique opportunity for ECRs to receive detailed feedback on their research and important guidance to improve the likelihood of their research being published. Interested ECRs should submit their 500 word abstracts, and complete the associated form, here by January 31st, 2025.
Fellowship Program for research support to early career health economics researchers
Deadline: February 17, 2025
IHEA is excited to announce the launch of a new Fellowship Program, which has been made possible by funding from the Canadian Centre for Health Economics (CCHE/CCES) and the International Development Research Centre (IDRC/CRDI).
This Program will pair an early-career researcher (ECR) with an experienced researcher for support throughout a research project, over the period of a year to a maximum of 18 months. Support will be provided from the phase of identifying a research question and proposal development, through data collection and analysis, to writing up and disseminating research findings. It is a research mentoring program and is envisaged as a collaborative relationship between the research mentor and mentee. It is distinct from IHEA’s professional development mentoring program. An award of USD5,000 will be provided for each Fellowship mentee-mentor pair.
The Program is particularly targeted at ECRs who are based in institutions that do not have experienced health economists who could provide such research support. Priority will be given to ECRs based in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs).
IHEA is seeking expressions of interest from both potential research mentees and mentors. Research mentees should either have completed a Master’s degree in Health Economics or Economics, or be a recent health economics Doctoral graduate. Research mentors should have at least 5 years of independent research experience and experience of collaborative research in countries and with institutions other than where they are based.
Full details of this new program and the two-stage application process can be found here. Applications close on February 17, 2025.
Professional Development Mentoring Program for early and mid-career health economists
Deadline: January 21, 2025
The IHEA Mentoring Program supports early- and mid-career health economists in their professional development and personal wellbeing. Mentees and mentors are matched based on common research and related interests, and other preferences. The program consists of at least four meetings, usually via video call, over a one-year period.
There have been four rounds of the program since it was started in 2019, and it has grown to nearly 100 mentor-mentee pairings per year. With the growth in interest in the mentoring program, we have moved to an online platform that facilitates matching of mentees and mentors. The platform also includes a range of resources providing tips for mentors and mentees, and various tools for planning and tracking progress during the program.
We are calling for applications from IHEA members to participate as mentees in the next round of the program, which will start in early 2025. While the program may be of particular interest to early-career health economists (currently studying or within 7 years of graduation), it is also of benefit to mid-career health economists who are working more independently and assuming more responsibility for supervision, managing research teams and other leadership activities. Eligible applicants must be an IHEA member and should not have participated in one of the previous rounds of the Mentoring Program.
We are also calling for expressions of interest in being a mentor. There are many benefits of serving as a mentor, such as:
- Being able to share valuable knowledge with others, based on your experience;
- Helping the next generation of health economists to use and further develop their skills, and motivate and support them to fulfill their potential;
- Developing your communication, coaching and leadership skills; and
- Providing an opportunity to reflect on your own practice.
You can apply to participate in the program by completing the relevant (mentor or mentee) form here. The platform is not integrated with the membership system, so you will need to create login details. Applications close on January 21, 2025.

The student contribution should be at least 75%.
Call for submissions for the Arrow Award
Deadline: January 15, 2025
IHEA’s annual Arrow Award was created to recognize excellence in the field of health economics with the Award presented to the author or authors of the paper judged to be the best paper published in health economics in English in the award year. The Award was set up in honour of the late Kenneth Arrow and in recognition of the influence of his seminal paper from 1963 “Uncertainty and the welfare economics of medical care”.
In pursuit of greater diversity in the papers considered for this award, including the research topics and health system contexts where research is undertaken, IHEA would like to encourage its members to nominate papers published in peer-reviewed journals during 2024 that push the frontiers of health economics forward.
Nominations for the Arrow Award can be submitted via a portal on the IHEA website (scroll to the bottom of the Arrow Award webpage). You will be asked to provide a brief motivation and must upload a copy of the published paper.
Call for Expressions of Interest in serving on the Arrow Award Committee
Deadline: January 8, 2025
IHEA is seeking health economists with a research and publication track record to join the Arrow Award Committee.
The annual Arrow Award is presented to the best published health economics paper submitted or nominated for consideration. Committee members serve a three-year term and may be re-appointed for up to one additional term. The Committee does not meet; instead, members are asked to review and score papers. This work is undertaken in the first quarter of each year.
If you are interested in serving on this committee, please send the following information to ihea@healtheconomics.org by January 8th, 2025:
- A brief motivation (500 words maximum) that outlines why you are interested in serving on the Arrow Award committee, and indicates how your interests and experience (even if limited) would make you suitable to serve on this committee.
- A brief CV indicating: qualifications (degrees and institutions that you have graduated from); current institutional affiliation; a link to your publication list (e.g. Google Scholar, ResearchGate, or institutional webpage); and other information that is relevant to the Arrow Award Committee.
Members of the IHEA Board and the Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Committee will review all expressions of interest and will select members according to their suitability for this committee (based on applicants’ written motivation and CV) and to promote geographic, gender and other aspects of diversity.
